Promise Me You'll Live

Chapter 9: "Promises"

Amy's POV

The acceptance letters started pouring in. Belongings found themselves in boxes. My life pieced itself together until it was ready for college. But not ready to go.

The months had passed. Winter had faded into Summer but Lily stayed the same. We never figured out her unfinished business.

“There’s got to be a way, I’m not leaving you like this-”

“Amy-”

The notebook is full but not one page has what she needs. Still, I flip through it frantically.

“I refuse to give up on you.”

“You’re not. It’s four years, I’ll be safe here.”

“No, Lily, we don’t know if you’ll be safe but I know for certain you won’t be happy!”

Something shifts in Lily’s eyes and she looks away. She knows something I don’t.

“You know what happens. You know what will happen to you if I leave, don’t you-”

“Amy, please calm down-”

“Lily, I can’t! We lose either way! If you can’t pass on, then you’ll be stuck here and we’ll be separated! If you do pass on, we don’t know where you’ll go and we’ll be separated! Why did the universe bring you to me if we were meant to be separated?!”

“You’re all I have to lose.”

“Listen to me. We don’t have much time left. Yes, I know what will happen if we’re separated, but we can’t do anything about that anymore. You’re going to miss your flight if you don’t leave now.”

“But I promised you I’d stay.”

“Then promise me something else. Promise me you’ll get out of here and go Disneyland. Meet lots of friends and beat them all at trivia. Promise me you’ll remember that money isn’t everything. Your parents didn’t care, but so many others will once they see you the way I do.”

Lily smiles at me faintly, tears forming in her eyes. It reminds me of the day we met, but this time she holds them still. As if time itself was holding its breath to hear what she’ll say next.

“Promise me you’ll live.”

“...I don’t know if I can do that without you.”
